Second UNMC deployment team returns to Omaha

The University of Nebraska Medical Center’s second Haiti deployment team returned to Omaha this week after spending nine days treating the injured from the Jan. 12 earthquake.

Among notable reports is that of a 16-year-old Haitian girl who will receive treatment of a life-threatening mouth tumor thanks to a UNMC team member.

Second UNMC team heads to Haiti

The second deployment of health care volunteers from UNMC and the Nebraska Medical Center will depart for Haiti Feb. 11 or 12. The group is leaving just two weeks after the first group returned from Haiti. Those 13 volunteers spent a week assisting Haitians wounded in the massive Jan. 12 earthquake that rocked the country.

The volunteers – eight nurses, two physicians, one pharmacist and one physician assistant – are expected to leave for Haiti on Thursday on board University of Miami/MediShare Haiti flights.

UNMC volunteers are on the ground in Haiti

UNMC Volunteers in HaitiThirteen volunteers from the University of Nebraska Medical Center are busy treating the wounded in Haiti as part of the recovery effort following the massive earthquake that struck the Caribbean nation Jan. 12

One group of volunteer doctors and nurses landed in Port-au-Prince Jan. 24 and went directly to work in a community hospital and a private clinic. The second group landed Jan. 25 and immediately was ushered to the Project MediShare field hospital at the main airport.

UNMC Haitian Relief Fund

Haiti ReliefThe University of Nebraska Medical Center is putting together a team of health care providers to go to Haiti to provide relief. UNMC will assemble a professional team that could either join a statewide group or work in collaboration with the U.S. State Department. Dr. Rubens Pamies, a UNMC vice chancellor, is from Haiti. He and his wife, who have both lost family members, will be leading the UNMC team, which is expected to include about 20 people.
