Lincoln—February 20, 2008—The family of Martha Jungck Hunzeker of Rushville has established an endowed memorial scholarship in her name with a gift to the University of Nebraska Foundation. The scholarship is available to graduates of a Sheridan County high school.
“Martha grew up in the Sandhills and was always a big supporter of the area,” said Vernon Hunzeker, of Lincoln, who is honoring his late wife by establishing a scholarship to support students in this region.
Each year, a $500 scholarship will be awarded from the Martha Jungck Hunzeker Scholarship Fund to a graduate of Hay Springs High School or Gordon-Rushville High School. Recipients must be newly enrolled at any campus of the University of Nebraska, and the scholarship will be awarded by the University of Nebraska System Scholarship Committee. The scholarship is renewable when the recipient maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
“I hope that it will help some student who may not have made up their mind to attend the university system to go ahead and do it,” Hunzeker said.
Martha Jungck Hunzeker was born on Jan. 13, 1939, in Rushville. She graduated from Rushville High School in 1957 and moved to Lincoln to attend the University of Nebraska and pursue her teaching degree. In 1960, she married Vern Hunzeker.
After taking time to raise her son, Andrew Hunzeker, she graduated from UNL with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1970, then worked for the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. for more than 20 years.
The University of Nebraska Foundation is a private, nonprofit corporation that has raised private gifts to support the University of Nebraska for 71 years. Last year, almost $90 million was provided for students, faculty, academic programs, research, and for campus and building improvements. More information is available at www.nufoundation.org.
