Life for students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha doesn’t come with an off switch.
UNO students have a passion to pursue their interests that can’t be contained to just the classroom, according to Cornelius Levering, outreach coordinator for Student Leadership and Involvement.
That’s where UNO’s diverse selection of recognized student organizations comes into play. With more than 180 active student organizations on campus, students have a wide range of opportunities — from clubs centered around academic interests to RSOs that help students pursue a new hobby or give back to their community through volunteer work.
“I’m really impressed by our student organizations,” Levering said. “Being able to walk through the [Milo Bail Student Center] or around the plaza and seeing the number of different student organizations that are active really says a lot about UNO and its student body.”
As an advisor to the Intertribal Student Council, Levering said he has seen firsthand the impact these organizations have on students who participate in them. Levering said the RSO has provided students with an opportunity to find their voice.
RSOs rely heavily on fundraising and donor support. For the Intertribal Student Council, Levering said opportunities like UNO’s annual Wear Black, Give Back giving day provided the group with funds to host its annual Wambli Sapa Memorial Powwow.
“It’s probably one of the biggest events that happens annually at the university,” Levering said. “This was our first year participating in Wear Black, Give Back, and we raised over $200.”
That support meant everything to students within ITSC, according to Levering.

Levering added that these gifts are an investment into the student body that materialize in new ways each day.
“I just have to say thank you for your donation to these organizations,” he said. “This is a game changer.”
