‘We’re a Brain Gain:’ How Donor Support is Bringing Future Students to Nebraska Law

When a prospective student first steps into Ross McCollum Hall on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s East Campus, they know they’ve found a home.

That may sound cliché, but thanks to the work of Melissa McCoy, assistant dean for admissions and enrollment operations at the College of Law, prospective students are choosing to pursue their education at the college at a high rate through the school’s annual Admitted Students Day event.

“More than 80% of the students who attend this Admitted Students Day event will end up here in the fall,” McCoy said. “They want to see the school, and we’re very proud of our facilities, but the main thing we want them to experience is our culture. This day gives them an opportunity to get an overview of what to expect as a law student.”

Donor support for the N Fund – College of Law plays a critical role in bringing prospective students to the event, McCoy said. The fund helps cover hotel and airfare expenses for out-of-state students who attend.

In turn, McCoy said, that investment helps attract future students from across the country who want to become Huskers.

According to McCoy, the culture that attracts so many students during Admitted Students Day can be found throughout the college. It’s reflected in the strong representation from student organizations and in the efforts faculty and staff make to connect with prospective students.

“This is a very strong community, and our professors have a lot to do with that,” McCoy said. “Yes, they are great researchers and have done very impressive things, but they are here to teach. I believe students can really sense that.”

McCoy said she is grateful to donors for supporting events like Admitted Students Day. She said the event helps launch successful careers for future law students.

“It puts us in a really special position where we can offer high-quality experiences to prospective and current students,” McCoy said. “We could not do that without our esteemed alumni and donors who are willing to invest in this college. I feel very fortunate, and I’m incredibly grateful for what our donors do for us.”
